Visiting Kauai, Hawaii With Kids

Kauai Family Vacation

Sharing is caring!

Kauai is just one of the amazing islands of Hawaii and is known as the Garden Isle (due to the rainforest that covers much of the island). The chill vibe of the island, lush greenery, stunning mountains (including the awe-inspiring Na Pali Coast), and of course, all the beaches, make traveling to Kauai with kids the perfect family island getaway! No need to spend hours and hours (or days & days) searching everywhere for what to do, where to stay, etc. This is your ultimate Kauai with kids travel guide – I've put it all in this article to save you a ton of time & stress!

My Travel Obsession - affiliate disclosure

We took a family vacation to Kauai for spring break in March and absolutely loved everything about it (like, I seriously could have just stayed there). If you haven’t been, move it to the top of your travel bucket list! You and your kids NEED to go to Kauai! To really get the most out of your Kauai experience, I recommend spending a few days on the north shore and few days on the south shore (more on that below).

How To Get To Kauai

The Lihue Airport (pronounced Luh-HU-ee) LIH is the only commercial airport on Kauai. If you’ve ever flown into LAX, well this airport is the complete opposite. It’s a very small airport, much of it open air with plenty of greenery & hibiscus plants to welcome you to the island.

PRO TIP: If you want to receive a lei upon arrival (Fantasy Island style), fly Hawaiian Airlines – or plan to buy yourself one upon landing. Despite what you've seen on TV, most airlines do not provide one upon landing.

If you are starting your trip on another Hawaiian island, you can catch a quick flight to Kauai on Hawaiian Airlines, Ohana by Hawaiian, Mokulele Airlines, or Makani Kai Air. There is no boat/ferry service to Kauai from the other islands.

How To Get Around in Kauai

The island is relatively small, but you will want to rent a car to get around. Always be aware of construction and commuters when planning driving time. There really is one main road that goes from Hanalei on the north shore, around the east side of the island, down to the south, and then up towards the west side of the island (you can’t drive all the way around the island), so it can get a little crowded.

When traffic is light and there is minimal construction, you can drive from the north shore (Hanalei Bay/Princeville area) to the south shore (Poipu area) in about an hour and 15 minutes. But that time can significantly increase if you are driving during high traffic times, so you definitely want to leave extra time when heading to the airport, just to be safe.

PRO TIP: I recommend renting through Rentalcars.com. They are the world’s biggest online car rental service and provide cars at over 60,000 locations worldwide. They specialize in finding the cheapest car rental deals from major brands such as Hertz, Avis, Alamo and Budget.

What To Pack for Kauai

In addition to your usual items, don’t forget to pack the following for your trip to Kauai! I’ve provided Amazon links to my personal recommendations where applicable. If you’d like to see all of my travel gadgets & gear recommendations, check out my Travel Resources page.

PRO TIP: Make sure you grab your free packing checklist! It has everything you'll need in an easy-to-use PDF checklist that you can use over & over!

  • Reef-Safe Sunscreen – Many sunscreens contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. These chemicals that have been shown to damage coral.

If you enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving and seeing all the aquatic plants and wildlife, help keep them all safe by using sunscreen that does not not contain these ingredients. Wearing long-sleeve UV blocking swim shirts can also be a big help by greatly reducing the amount of sunscreen needed.
  • Rain Jacket – October through March are the wettest months on Kauai, but you really need to be prepared anytime you go. After all, Mount Waialeale (a mountain in the center of the island) is one of the wettest places on earth, receiving close to 460 inches of rainfall each year.
  • Hiking Boots (for adults & kids) – Obviously, if you don’t plan on hiking, you won’t need these. But, if you really want to see all that Kauai has to offer, you should definitely fit in at least a few hikes. Here are my adult & kids recommendations.
  • Hiking Backpack – If you plan to do some hiking, you are going to want a hiking backpack to carry all of your snacks, water, & clothing layers in. Ladies – check out my article The BEST Hiking Backpacks For Women, or just grab my top pick here.
  • Snorkel Equipment – There is some great snorkeling right off the beach. While some resorts offer equipment rental, I prefer to have my own.
  • Chaffing Cream – We’ve all seen it…little boys walking around, legs spread wide at the end of a day at the beach. A rash from sand and salt water can really ruin an otherwise great beach vacation. Save yourself and your little ones by applying chaffing cream before heading out (and rinse off & reapply a couple of times throughout the day).
  • Motion Sickness Medications (if needed) – I hope for your sake you never suffer from motion sickness. But, if you’re like me…you’ll need a little help before flying or going on a long boat ride to snorkel or scuba. I wrote a whole article discussing 20 remedies for motion sickness.
  • Aloe Gel – No matter how much we try, one of us always gets a little pink. We’ve tried many kinds of gels, creams, etc. & this one is a family favorite. It’s the only one we use. We even had it shipped to us once while on vacation when we ran out!
  • Binoculars – The likelihood of seeing whales and/or dolphins from the shore is extremely high, but sometimes they are a good ways out. Do yourself a favor and pack binoculars so you can zoom in and enjoy!
  • Water Shoes – Kauai is a volcanic island which means you may encounter some volcanic rocks while playing in the surf. Here's my recommendations for adults & kids. I personally like the ones that look more like a tennis shoe and have holes big enough for sand to flow through.
  • Layers – depending on when you go, it can be a little cool in the mornings and evenings, so be sure to pack a few layers of clothing.
  • Plenty of travel comfort & entertainment items for the long flight. I have many recommendations for both over on my Travel Resources page.
  • Detailed Guide Book (if needed) – I have tried to give you everything you need to plan your trip in this article (without all the stuff you don’t). But, if you really want to dig into EVERYTHING Kauai, I recommend The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed. I used this book a bunch to research prior to our trip and it was very helpful.

General Tips For Visiting Kauai With Kids

What’s The Weather Like on Kauai

Kauai gets the most rainfall from October through March (with December & March receiving the most). Luckily, the majority of the rain falls at night and most daytime showers are brief. We were there in March. Although it rained a bit each day, we only had one day where it rained a good portion of the day. Even then, it was a light rain and we just threw on our rain jackets and went hiking in the rain. Most days, there was a very brief shower mid-day that only lasted 15-30 minutes.

The highest temperatures can be found in May through November with highs in the low to mid-’80s and lows in the low to mid-70’s. Temperatures December through April range from mid 60’s to upper 70’s. Again, we were there in March & it was very pleasant. We were warm enough midday to enjoy the beach and swim in the ocean (though a little cold for my taste). Lightweight pants and a jacket were a must in the mornings & evenings.

Chill Out

The overall feeling is super laid back and low-key. This is a tropical paradise and people on the island do not get in a hurry. Just go with the flow and don’t try to rush.

Chickens, Chickens, Everywhere

Have you heard about the Kauai chickens? There are feral chickens all over the island. Yep, that’s right…chickens. Not to worry, they won’t hurt you at all and they are fun to see at the beach, on hiking trails, in the grocery store parking lot, etc. The chickens are protected under state law.

Gypsy Guide App

I first discovered this app before our trip to Kauai and I will never go on another vacation without it! It’s an audio tour app and it really is incredible. Before your trip, just check to see if they have a tour available for your destination. If so, get the app & download the tour.

For just a few dollars, you will feel like you have a personal tour guide right in your car. My whole family loved it (even the pre-teen)! If you want to learn interesting facts, tips on local beaches, turn-by-turn directions, food recommendations, and more, get the tour for Kauai…it’s seriously awesome!

Is Hawaii Expensive?

You’ve probably heard that Hawaii is expensive & you’ve heard that for good reason. Flights and lodging can be expensive, but meals are where you are likely to feel it the most.

Most restaurants are open-air & super casual. Entrees are often served in a plastic tub lined with paper and will run you around $20-$30 per dish (that can add up fast for a big family). You can find a few less expensive places and several that are more expensive, of course, but you should be prepared. Most meals for my family of three totaled over $100.

PRO TIP: Choose lodging with a kitchen & cook to keep food costs down.

How Are The Waves On Kauai?

Ok, y’all…I’m from Texas. We have “waves” at Texas beaches, but NOTHING like what I experienced on Kauai. There is a reason surfers from all over the world head to Hawaii to catch big waves. Luckily, there are plenty of kid-friendly beaches on Kauai that are perfect for little ones to enjoy snorkeling & swimming.

To help stay safe in the water, choose beaches with a lifeguard and always ask about conditions. This website has all the Kauai beaches listed, shows which ones are lifeguarded, and gives you other important beach info. Always pay attention to signs indicating hazardous conditions. And, of course, never let children swim unattended.

Bonfires & cooking fires are illegal on public beaches.

Can You Drink Alcohol On The Beach In Kauai?

Open containers of alcohol are not allowed in public places, including beaches, parks, etc. However, there are several resorts that are right on the edge of the beach that have a bar or restaurant area where you can sit and enjoy the ocean view, cocktail in hand (especially on the south shore).

The Best Time Of Year To Visit Kauai

In my opinion, anytime is a good time to visit Kauai. You’ll typically get a bit more rain and cooler temperatures October through March, while there will be more people visiting in the warmer, dryer, summer months.

Seals On The Beach

It is a wonderful treat if you happen to see Hawaiian Monk Seals resting on the beach (we saw several). Feel free to take a ton of pictures of these endangered animals, but don’t get too close. Officials will often rope off the area around the seals & it is illegal to approach or harass them.

Kauai North Shore vs. South Shore

We stayed a few nights on the north shore and then and few nights on the south shore. Our favorite was the north shore. Although it rained more on the north shore and temperatures were a bit cooler, it was more remote. It really had that chill island vibe we were looking for & wasn’t crowded, which we loved. We stayed in Princeville (read below for where to stay) and then drove over to Hanalei most days (a short gorgeous drive). The people were very laid back and we really felt like locals. If/when I ever have a house on Kauai, it will be in that area.

The south shore was warmer & dryer, but more populated with both locals & tourists. The beaches are lined with resorts. While this was convenient, we did not like the touristy vibe as much. However, Poipu beach was our hands-down favorite for snorkeling (read below under things to do). So, if you have the time, I recommend splitting your time between the two shores so you can really experience all that Kauai has to offer.

Where To Stay On Kauai With Kids

To get a good feel of the whole island, I recommend staying a few nights on the north shore and a few nights on the south. This way, you’ll be able to really explore everything Kauai has to offer! I've highlighted a few properties below, but you” also want to check out my top 10 recommended properties for the north shore and top 10 for the south shore.

Where To Stay On Kauai’s North Shore

The town of Princeville is perfect because you can see the amazing sunsets, there is a grocery store super close, many beaches close by and it is just a short scenic drive to Hanalei. Foodland is a good-sized & well-stocked grocery store in Princeville. VRBO has many options for homes and condos in Princeville.

PRO TIP: Many places to stay on the island do not have air conditioning. There is usually a cool breeze and the layouts are designed to take advantage of that, but if you MUST have AC, make sure you read the find print and choose lodging that has it.

Where To Stay In Princeville, Kauai

Where We Stayed:

My #1 favorite place (as in my favorite place I have EVER stayed ANYWHERE) was this condo we found on VRBO. It was clean, comfy, and the perfect size for my small family of three. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. And check out THE VIEWS! We saw whales from the patio many times (don’t forget your binoculars). Every evening, we sat outside to watch the sunset. Seriously, I never wanted to leave. The owners also provide awesome extras like beach chairs, boogie boards, beach bags, and more! This was a huge bonus! Obviously, I highly recommend this condo.

PRO TIP: When booking your lodging, read the fine print to see if they have beach chairs, boogie boards, etc. There are not places where you can rent them on the north shore & you will be so glad if they have them available for you to use!

Where To Stay On Kauai’s South Shore

Poipu Beach was our favorite beach on Kauai, so staying close is my recommendation. Plus, there are several other beaches in that area as well and there are plenty of grocery stores, restaurants, and shopping. VRBO has many options for homes and condos in Poipu.

Where To Stay In Poipu, Kauai

Where We Stayed We stayed in one of the condos in Kiahuna Plantation Resort. The exact one we stayed in is no longer available for rent, but it was very similar to this one (in fact, this one is in a better location on the property being closer to the beach). This property is convenient to everything in the area. You can walk along the shore a ways to Poipu beach from here & Kiahuna Plantation has a place by the beach where you can rent beach chairs, snorkels, kayaks, etc.

Other Places To Stay In Poipu

Marriott Waiohai- Beautiful resort on Poipu Beach This is where I wish we could have stayed. The location could not be more perfect. Just a short walk to the best beach – Poipu Beach. This resort also has a beachside bar/restaurant (not many around) and a private lawn area that is PERFECT for watching the amazing sunsets. There are many condos on VRBO at the Marriott with a range of prices (depending on the view, location, size, etc.) See more Marriott properties HERE.

Must See & Things To Do On Kauai With Kids

Hiking

Kauai has great hiking trails for all skill levels. Here are some that we did. If you go in March (like we did), just be prepared for the trails to be muddy…all of them were. You'll want to make sure you have good hiking shoes with good grip! Most have walking sticks at the trailhead. If you don’t have trekking poles, you will want to grab a stick. Once you’re done, just leave it at the trailhead for the next person.

PRO TIP: If you plan to hike, get the AllTrails app and go ahead and pay for the pro version. You can search the area for the best trails, filter by difficulty (an excellent option with kids) and then download the trail maps you need to your phone so you won’t have to worry about losing signal & getting lost. We’ve used it for year s and it’s a must-have app for all hikers in my opinion.

MY TOP PICK: Sleeping Giant Trail (West)

This was an AWESOME HIKE. The difficulty is rated as moderate, but it’s only 1.7 miles out & back. It’s a little difficult in spots & muddy (like all of them in March), but totally doable. My 11-year old was able to do it with no problem at all. You’ll get to an area that looks like it might be the end of the trail with picnic tables & a bench. This is not the end…keep going.

You’ll end up scrambling up a few boulders. The view at the top is amazing! Almost a 360-degree view of the island. There is a cool little cave just down to the left of the top. We all agreed that this was our favorite trail hands down. On the way down, my son said “hashtag…worth it!”

Okolehao Trail (North)

It rained off & on the whole time we hiked this trail, but we had our raincoats and it was actually kind of nice & refreshing. The difficulty is rated as moderate and it is 2.8 miles out & back. It’s a steep trail with lots of roots, so watch your footing. You’ll feel like you are going upstairs most of the way. It was VERY muddy & slippery. Again, grab a walking stick.

Things to do in Kauai with kids
Top of Okolehao Trail

Lookout #1 nice place to stop for a minute. Lookout #2 has awesome views. We saw several chickens on this trail (one followed us for a good while). We saw several young kids doing it (around 5 years old) and older people too.

Kuilau Ridge Trail

The muddiest trail we hiked and there is no way around the mud (which is kind of fun…when was the last time you played in the mud?). It’s rated as moderate difficulty and is 3.6 miles out & back. There is a small waterfall, but a pretty disappointing one so, if you are hiking for the waterfall specifically, skip it.

Kuilau Ridge Trail

When you arrive, you will see a very small parking lot (that’s the trailhead) & then just a bit down the road there is another bigger lot by the river/creek. We parked in the second bigger lot & rinsed off our shoes before leaving.

If you just want a little exercise walking through ankle-deep mud with great views all along the way – this one is for you. You’ll want to turn around at the bridge (it turns into another trail there). It is possible that this trail is less muddy in the summer months since there is not as much rain but be prepared either way.

Hiking with kids in kauai

Queen’s Bath Trail (North)

This is a short 0.8 mile out & back trail to the Queen’s Bath, an interesting & picturesque swimming spot. October through May, this area gets some serious waves (like, slam you into the rocks or drag you under kind of waves) & the trail is often closed (as it was when we went). I read that many people say they go anyway even if the gates are closed, but my research convinced me that it really can be very dangerous & I decided to trust that if the gates are closed, it’s too dangerous.

In the summer months, however, it can be a nice, though moderately difficult, hike and a fun spot to swim. Before you go, check out this article. It’s super informative and has a VERY helpful picture to show you exactly where to go (and where NOT to go).

Paid Excursions & Activities

I use both Viator or Get Your Guide to find amazing things to do while on vacation. Always buy your tickets in advance!

MY TOP PICK: This Helicopter Tour of the Na Pali Coast

This was my all-time favorite excursion that I have EVER DONE! I HIGHLY recommend it! Our tour was almost canceled due to rain. Luckily, we were able to go! It was a little rainy and cloudy so the views & pictures were not as good as they might have been on a clear day, but still…it did not disappoint. You’ll see the stunning Na Pali coast, the waterfall from Jurassic Park (& MANY others) & Waimea Canyon. The pilot was excellent & knowledgeable and pointed out a ton of stuff throughout the flight. Just go book it….like right NOW!

PRO-TIP: Helicopter tours can be cancelled due to weather conditions. To make sure you get to do this amazing activity, book it early in your trip. If it has to be cancelled due to weather, you’ll be able to reschedule to another day.

Kauai Hawaii with kids
Our view of the Na Pali coast from the helicopter

Auli’i Lu’au

You just can’t go to Hawaii and NOT go to a luau right? After reading many reviews, I booked tickets for the Auli’i Lu’au. It was supposed to be on the beach, but due to rain, it was moved indoors. I’m sure the beach would have been a great addition to the atmosphere, but it was still a wonderful show.

The MC was great & it was entertaining for all of us. There was an open bar all evening and the Poke was excellent. I paid extra for premier seating (which meant we were in the first few rows). Paying extra for premier seats will get you a good view of all the action!

Captain Andy’s Na Pali Snorkel BBQ Sail

The wind was too intense the day we booked our trip, so we didn’t get to go to the Na Pali coast (a huge bummer). But we went to another area and did see a ton of spinner dolphins, and several sea turtles and whales so that was awesome. The skipper & crew were really great & the food was good.

The snorkeling was just okay. The water was very deep and the fish were not very close. The snorkeling was better just off of Poipu Beach. To be fair, it may have been amazing if we had been able to go on the originally planned route and I have no doubt that seeing the Na Pali Coast would have been well worth it.

Beaches

Some beaches are nice and kid-friendly and some are not. Check out this website for a list of all of the beaches on Kauai and get specific information about each one.

Hanalei Beach (North)

MY TOP PICK for the best beach on Kauai’s north shore. This is a long beach with STUNNING views. The water is perfect for kids and boogie boarding. There is a bunch of driftwood washed ashore and the whole family will love building little huts with the wood (you’ll see abandoned attempts all around the beach). There are restrooms close by and a lifeguard on duty.

PRO TIP: Get there early. This beach is super popular and will get crowded later in the day. Plan to start your day here. We arrived at about 9:00am & it was perfect. We headed out to grab lunch around 12:00pm and it was getting pretty crowded then.

Kid Friendly Beaches in Kauai
Our driftwood hut on Hanalei Beach

Poipu Beach (South)

MY TOP PICK for the best beach on Kauai’s south shore. If you want to see some tropical fish for free and up close…this is the place! We saw several whales in the distance and a random chicken or two on the beach as well. It is a great place for kids to swim and there is a lifeguard on duty. If you want to see an awesome sunset…hang around until dark!

Maniniholo Dry Cave (North)

We stumbled upon this awesome dry cave while we were out exploring. It’s located directly across the street from Haena Beach Park. It’s free and you can just walk around for as long as you like. It won’t take long to explore, but it’s really cool and worth a stop if you are in the area. If you have a flashlight handy, you’ll be able to go further & see a bit more.

Kīlauea Lighthouse (North)

The lighthouse is in a gorgeous location with amazing views both from the parking lot and from the point! Buy tickets in advance HERE. The lighthouse is only open on select days.

PRO TIP: I recommend you arrive 30 minutes before the gates open to get a parking spot (they fill up fast). Once the gates open, head straight to the little building next to the lighthouse to sign up for the guided lighthouse tour (offered every hour only on Wednesdays & Saturdays).

Kauai with Kids

Spouting Horn (South)

This naturally formed blowhole is one of the most photographed spots on Kauai! The water runs into a lava tube and shoots out high into the air and it makes the coolest sound! You don’t need a lot of time there, but definitely worth a few moments. We also saw sea turtles playing in the water!

Where To Eat & Drink On Kauai With Kids

Where To Eat & Drink on Kauai’s North Shore

MY TOP PICK: Kalypso Island Bar & Grill: Very casual. The best Mai Tia we had on the north shore (and we tried several…you know, for research). The food was also excellent! We especially enjoyed the pork Baja Tacos & Macho Nachos (BIG).

The Hanalei Gourmet: Very casual indoor/outdoor dining. Great food and really good Mai Tia’s.

Hideaway Pizza Pub: Casual indoor dining. This is on the property of the condo where we stayed in Princeville. Really great pizza! The Hawaiian pizza was our favorite. They also have great Mai Tai’s and the service was really good.

There are several grab & go type eateries in the market area in Hanalei (across the street from The Hanalei Gourmet). Lots of great options there too!

Where To Eat & Drink on Kauai’s South Shore

MY TOP PICK: Keoki’s Paradise: Casual outdoor dining with live music. Best Mai Tai’s on Kauai (hey, when in Hawaii…)! Get the Panko & Mac Nut Crusted Fish…it was excellent!

Da Crack: Very casual walk-up dining (takeout only). Delicious burritos, bowls & tacos!

Warehouse 3540: A fun area of boutique shops and food trucks.

Marriott Hotel Beach Bar (Poipu Beach): Conveniently located right off the beach. Outdoor & very casual. Frozen Mia Tai was good & the Pork Nachos were excellent.

Where To Eat In Lihue

Hamura Saimin: Saimin is a traditional Hawaiian dish. Hamura Saimin is casual and inexpensive. This is where the locals go! Get an order of Special Saimin, Crispy Fried Wontons, and a slice of Lilikoi Chiffon Pie for dessert!
