In-Depth Review of Each of the Best Hiking Gifts For Him

Garmin InReach Mini

Best for staying in touch

The InReach Mini from Garmin is one of those gifts for hiking enthusiasts who like to wander off the beaten path. It does just what the name suggests, it is a compact, pocket-sized communication device.

Though it’s a practical gift, you can give these backpacking gifts for men a more personal touch by picking out his favorite color.

For hikers that go off-grid, this offers great peace of mind for the adventurer themselves as well as their close friends and family.

It’s small enough to fit into the palm of his hand, and he can send out an SOS alert, as well as send and receive text messages from his loved ones. Each text comes with his exact location on the map & GPS coordinates!

There’s more for Garmin InReach Mini owners too. Via the Garmin Explore site, he can plot routes, store location data, create pre-prepared short text messages, link his social media pages and sort out the device settings to his liking.

GPS tracking, a tough silicone case, and an electronic compass complete the picture. Definitely among the best walking gifts for men who like to wander off on their own.

We’re obsessed with:

  • Choice of colors
  • Pocket and palm-sized
  • Tough, removable silicone case
  • Send an SOS or text message
  • Garmin Explore site for planning and much more

Not so hot:

  • Not to be used as a cell phone

Merrell Moab 3 Hiking Boots

Best for someone you know well

Hiking boots or hiking shoes can be a great idea if he’s in the market for a new pair. This hiking gift for him is best reserved for someone you know well. He may have a favorite pair of hiking shoes or hiking boots already with plenty of life in them, in which case it might be wise to steer clear.

But if you know his shoe size and that he’d really appreciate new hiking footwear, then this is among the top hiker gifts for him. Of course, you can pick out something from a brand you already know he likes, but if you’re seeking inspiration then we highly recommend these Merrells.

The Merrell Moab 3 is very highly rated indeed. It comes in six colors too, so you can pick the one he’ll like best. The options include gray, olive, black, and various shades of brown. This is one of those active gifts for him that he can use during everyday life too.

A clever waterproof layer lets sweat escape while preventing water from entering, and the tongue is also designed to stop debris from getting in.

The Merrell Air Cushion in the heel, extra cushioning and a molded insole ensure his comfort and stability with every step. A Vibram® outsole also provides a great grip.

**If he needs a wider fit, check out our top recommendations for hiking shoes for wide feet (these Merrell's made that list too). Or, if he likes a barefoot feel, here are our top picks for barefoot hiking shoes. These also made it onto our list of the best boots for plantar fasciitis.

We’re obsessed with:

  • 6 colors
  • Top brand
  • Great traction
  • Merrell Air Cushion
  • Breathable, waterproof membrane

Not so hot:

  • May not be warm enough for winter hikes

Peak Design Capture Clip

Best for keen photographers

The Capture Clip from Peak Design is ideal for keen photographers.

If he’s all about capturing every moment on the trails, then this is just the thing to go with his hi-tech camera. With a lifetime warranty, it’s also one of those hiking gift ideas for him with longevity.

It’s small enough to fit in the palm of his hand (though he won't need to hold it). It clips securely and comfortably to his daypack or bigger backpack, so he can carry his camera hands-free.

The Capture Clip is also compatible with any compact, DSLR, or point-and-shoot camera.

The quick-release button is ultra tough and can take about as much force as he can subject it to.

The clever device can be attached to a belt or backpack strap up to 2.5 inches wide and 0.6 of an inch thick. So have a quick measure while he’s not looking before you order!

If he’s really into this, the same company makes various other accessories he's sure to find useful. See those HERE. Extra accessories and adapter kits or plates will also allow him to carry a GoPro, binoculars, or additional lenses.

We’re obsessed with:

  • Lifetime warranty
  • Fits onto backpack strap or belt
  • Ultra-tough quick-release button
  • Extra accessories & plates are available
  • Compatible with compact, DSLR & point-and-shoot cameras

Not so hot:

  • Adapter plate is needed for GoPro
  • Quite pricey

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles

Best for added stability

One of the top gifts for hikers – men or women – is a pair of Black Diamond Trail trekking poles. Made using cork, rubber, and aluminum, they’re ideal for giving a little extra stability.

These trekking poles won’t weigh him down at all, thanks to the incredibly lightweight construction.

The all-cork top is also ergonomically designed to offer a soft touch grip, and there’s also a super comfortable wrist strap for carrying hands-free. It’s one of the ideal hiking gifts for guys who would love a little more support.

FlickLock adjustability means he can achieve the perfect fit, while the tip can be switched over if he likes to suit his preferences & terrain. A set of carbide tech tips comes with this pair of Black Diamond poles.

We’re obsessed with:

  • Male-specific fit
  • Top quality materials
  • Lightweight aluminum
  • 100% natural cork grips
  • Ergonomic, padded wrist straps

Not so hot:

  • Tips supplied don’t suit everyone

AllTrail Pro App Annual Subscription

Best for trail maps

The best hiking trail map app available!

With the AllTrails app, he can research trails all over the world before heading out to find the trails that are the most highly rated. He'll be able to filter by the length of the trails & difficulty.

The pro version allows him to download offline maps for the trail he may want to tackle, so he can follow along on the trail map in real time, even if he has no cell service. The app will even alert him if he gets off the route so he'll never get lost.

There is even a ‘Lifeline' option that he can use to keep friends and loved ones informed of where he is while he's out on the trail.

***You'll need to click this link on a desktop for it to take you to the gifting option

We’re obsessed with:

  • Top hiking app
  • SO MANY Trails
  • Easy to use
  • Real-time trail tracking
  • Lifeline option

Not so hot:

  • Only works if your phone is charged up

PRO TIP: When using the app out on a trail, turn your phone to airplane mode. You'll still be able to follow along with your map, but it won't run down your phone battery as quickly.

Columbia Powder Lite jacket

Best for winter hikers

If you know he’d love a Nano puff jacket for winter hikes, try this Columbia one for size.

The Powder Lite is fully breathable, yet ultra warm and snug. Columbia’s own patented Omni-Heat™ lining is reflective, so it directs heat back towards his torso to keep the core insulated.

Yet if he’s hiking uphill and starts to sweat, this innovative jacket is capable of dissipating that unwanted moisture too.

The outer is water resistant for those unexpected snow or rain showers, and as compared to other winter hiking jackets this one’s competitively priced.

A pair of zippered side pockets, a drawcord hem, and snug elasticated cuffs add to the warmth and practicality of this outdoor wear.

It’s one of the finest camping and hiking gift ideas for active men – especially those seeking winter hiking gear.

We’re obsessed with:

  • More budget friendly than the Nano
  • Water-resistant shell
  • 2 zipped side pockets
  • Reflective thermal lining
  • Breathable to wick away moisture

Not so hot:

  • Water-resistant rather than waterproof

Darn Tough Socks

Best for foot comfort

A pair of great socks makes one of the greatest gifts for beginner hikers or seasoned walkers. Darn Tough socks are prized by outdoor sorts for the supreme level of comfort they offer, and are made using Merino wool.

With spandex too, these hiking socks provide a superb, snug fit with no bunching up. They won’t slip, even when he’s tackling the most challenging trails. The socks can also wick away moisture and dry out very fast.

The really clever feature is the seemingly seamless design, which makes the joins undetectable. This makes the hosiery feel ultra smooth and super soft and minimizes the risk of hot spots & blisters.

Made in Vermont, these socks come in four colors – and best of all they also come with an unconditional lifetime warranty.

We’re obsessed with:

  • 63% Merino wool
  • Seamless design
  • Unconditional lifetime warranty
  • No bunching, slipping or blisters
  • Moisture-wicking & quick-drying

Not so hot:

  • Not the cheapest pair of socks

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter

Best for survivalists

Treat him to this innovative water filtration system so he'll never go thirsty again. If he loves summer hiking when he may use up his water fast, or if he goes on long treks & doesn't want to carry the extra water weight, this unique little gadget is perfect.

This water filter protects him against a whole realm of undesirables. Including 99.999% plus parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, or bacteria like Salmonella and E.coli. Dirt, sand, dust, microplastics, and cloudiness are also removed.

This LifeStraw could supply him with up to 4,000 liters of water over its lifetime. It’s made using BPA- free materials and has been rigorously tested to meet US EPA, ASTM, and NSF water purifier standards. What water bottle can do that?

When you purchase this, you get the feelgood factor too. With every LifeStraw sold, a school pupil in need is given safe drinking water for the whole academic year. So it's more than just one of the top trekking gifts for him!

We’re obsessed with:

  • Ultra-portable
  • Filters out 99.999% + of nasties
  • Protects against bacteria, parasites & dirt
  • Can supply 4,000 liters of safe drinking water
  • Clean drinking water for a child for every one sold

Not so hot:

  • Maybe a bit bigger than it appears

PackIt Freezable Classic Lunch Bag

Best for summer hikers

Reusable food storage may not seem like one of the most exciting gifts for male hikers, but just take a look at this. It’s a lunch bag that can be frozen, so he can enjoy deliciously chilled food even after hours of hiking in summer.

This snack bag comes in 22 colors and patterns, ranging from plain black to dots, stripes, and an array of camo options. As the type of gel used in ice packs is built into the walls of this small cooler, there's no need for ice packs.

How does it work? You collapse the lunch bag before freezing overnight. Then he can fill it with his favorite hiking snacks or a complete picnic meal. Being able to carry cold food means he can have more food options (including healthy ones).

This is the original freezable lunch cooler, proudly designed in California. Some of the best features are the buckle handle that can attach to a backpack, and the outer zip pocket providing dry storage for non-food essentials.

We’re obsessed with:

  • Freezes overnight
  • Enables healthier eating
  • Buckles onto a backpack
  • Keeps food chilled for hours without ice packs

Not so hot:

  • Adds extra bulk to his load

Travel First Aid Kit

Best for medical emergencies

Whether he’s an accident-prone sort or not, even a minor injury really can slow down progress on the trails. Plus there’s always the risk of blisters, even with hiking footwear that is broken in.

Therefore, a compact travel first aid kit is one of the top walking gifts for him.

In terms of price, it’s very affordable, but it comes with 100 items that might even save his life. We’ve picked this one out because it includes a reflective emergency blanket to keep him warm in cold conditions – or after experiencing shock.

Other useful inclusions are tweezers, medical tape, safety pins, scissors, cotton buds, and of course, a range of bandages. There are even iodine wipes to prep the skin with and antiseptic wipes for cleaning.

This isn’t only one of the best hiking gifts for men, it’s also among the cheapest!

The compact pouch is also small and flexible, so it fits neatly into the smallest space.

We’re obsessed with:

  • Emergency blanket
  • Portable, compact pouch
  • Scissors, tweezers & safety pins
  • Antibacterial and iodine skin wipes
  • Includes mini emergency care guide

Not so hot:

  • Some items may never be used (then again, that's probably a good thing)

Kelty Cosmic 20 Sleeping Bag

Best for overnight hikers

If he doesn't have a quality sleeping bag yet or if his is a little worse for wear, a new one will be much sought-after by any multi-day hiker.

Cut to the chase with this great value buy from Kelty, which is one of the best hiking, camping, and backpacking gifts for him you’ll find. What we really love about this particular product is the fact that it comes in three sizes (there’s a women’s version too)!

Its trapezoid shape is great for retaining heat – and makes the bag more compact to carry. This is why it’s top among activity gifts for him if he likes to stay out overnight!

For the price, it’s hard to believe this bag is stuffed with DriDown insulation (a natural down). This Kelty filling has been treated to make it as warm, dry, and lightweight as possible.

There’s just no substitute for a real down bag when it comes to performance and minimizing weight.

This Kelty sleeping bag can be unzipped at the bottom as well as the top, so it’s perfect for those stuffy summer nights under canvas. There’s even an internal pocket for his flashlight or cell phone.

 We’re obsessed with:

  • Ultra lightweight
  • DriDown insulated filling
  • Incredible value for money
  • Concealed internal pocket
  • Bottom unzips as well as top

Not so hot:

  • 3 season rather than 4

National Geographic US National Parks Guide

Best for the well-informed

If he’s having a long-standing love affair with our National Parks, then this book from National Geographic will keep him busy for a while. The best camping gifts for him aren’t always those for outdoor use, as planning every hike is all part of the fun!

This book will ensure he gets to know all 63 National Parks, from the most famous to the smaller and lesser-known ones. If he’s yet to explore locations like White Sands, Gateway Arch Mammoth Caves, or Indiana Dunes, for example, then this book will show him the way.

Everything is covered in this comprehensive guide – from hiking and travel tips to detailed maps and wildlife-spotting hints. Surely there’s no better gift for a big National Park fan who also loves to read (and plan out their next hike).

 We’re obsessed with:

  • National Geographic guide
  • Includes detailed park maps
  • Covers 63 US National Parks
  • Top travel, wildlife, & hiking tips

Not so hot:

  • A little heavy to take on-the-go

Petzl Tikkina Headlamp

Best for lighting the way

If there’s any chance he’ll get stuck on the trail as it gets dark (or if he likes to start super early) and he hasn't yet got hold of a headlamp, then he really needs one of these!

This compact product is one of the most lightweight headlights on the market.

The Petzl Tikkina is a slimline version of the Tikka. It’s ideal for everyday use as well as hiking, such as dog-walking or going for a run in the dark.

Eight colors are available, so he can blend in with classic black or make a statement with a pop of bright red, blue, or green. Subtle shades of gray are also offered.

Three AAA batteries are used to power this headtorch. It gives out 250 lumens of light, and he can select the brightness level to suit the conditions. This wearable flashlight only weighs 81 grams, so it’s ultra simple to take along when he may need it.

 We’re obsessed with:

  • 8 colors
  • 3 brightness levels
  • Compact version of the Petzl Tikka
  • Powered by readily available AAA batteries
  • Compatible with CORE rechargeable battery

Not so hot:

  • CORE rechargeable battery not included
  • More powerful headlamps are available

TiTo Titanium Spork

Best budget buy

If he loves to eat as much as he likes to hike – and appreciates a fun, clever design – then buy him this titanium spork by TiTo. It’s long-handled so he can eat directly from pouches and cans with ease and comes in some really cool colors.

The size and shape make it ideal for stirring the pot over the campfire as well as eating the finished meal. It comes complete with its own carry bag, which is quick-drying for when he needs to store it while it’s still wet from washing.

This multi-purpose utensil resists odor penetration, high temperatures, and rusting, and is also tough enough to give him many happy years of use. Buy one, or a two-piece cutlery set.

 We’re obsessed with:

  • Uber cool design
  • Ultra tough titanium
  • Quick-dry carry bag
  • Great range of colors
  • Resists rust, odors & heat

Not so hot:

  • No knife function

Leatherman Charge Plus Multi-Tool

Best for lifelong use

Any Leatherman is an outstanding product. It’s a great gift for a man that can also last him for a lifetime. The multi-tool is kinda like a Swiss Army Knife, but even better. People who own these say there’s no going back.

The Charge Plus includes 19 tools. There are screwdrivers, a wire crimper and stripper, replaceable wire cutters, plain and serrated knives, a saw, a ruler, a range of pliers and files, a cutting hook, and can and bottle openers.

This Leatherman multi-tool comes with a stainless steel or black finish, and every tool can be accessed by using one hand. There’s a lanyard ring and pocket clip attached for securing it to his pack, and it’s all backed up by a 25-year limited warranty.

Every single Leatherman is made – and repaired if necessary – here in the USA.

We’re obsessed with:

  • 19 tools
  • One-handed access
  • Stainless steel or black
  • 25-year limited warranty
  • Lanyard ring & pocket clip

Not so hot:

  • Relatively expensive

Osprey Talon 22 Men’s Backpack

Best for carrying all the stuff

We couldn’t write a guide to hiking gifts that didn’t include an Osprey backpack in it somewhere! These awesome products are made by our go-to brand. This pack can carry all his stuff, is incredibly comfortable, and well-made.

There are lots to choose from, so it really depends on what he needs to take along with him.

As a daypack, our favorite for men is the Talon 22. It comes in a range of colors – including a zingy lime green that’s easy to spot, a cool gray, and classic black (which will hide all the dirt & grime from the trail).

A hydration sleeve is built into this one, so if you want to treat him to a water reservoir as a separate present then you’re good to go.

There’s also Osprey’s Stow-On-The-Go attachment for his hiking poles, plus a LidLock attachment for a helmet. Ideal for hikers who are also climbers and cyclists.

Other practical features that make this pack stand out include dual zip access to the main section, a fully adjustable shoulder harness so it’s simple to get the right fit.

It comes with convenient side mesh pockets with stretch for water bottles and other handy items plus a couple of hip belt pockets. The hip belt and a chest strap make it really comfortable to wear too, for an almost-weightless feeling.

We’re obsessed with:

  • Made to last
  • Dual zip access
  • Water reservoir sleeve
  • Side & hip belt pockets
  • Attachments for helmet & poles

Not so hot:

  • Limited space for water bladder

A Walk in the Woods

Best for bookworms – or movie fans

If he loves to read biographies or novels rather than travel guides, then A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson is one of the most laugh-out-loud books around. It tells the tale of the travel writer’s attempt to tackle the Appalachian Trail, often with hysterically funny results.

Bill Bryson is an American from Des Moines, Iowa who has traveled all over the world. He partly followed in his father’s footsteps, as the late Mr. Bryson senior was a sports journalist. Now living in England, he’s resided in both the US and the UK with his family.

Bill’s Appalachian trail adventure sees him accompanied by a friend known as Stephen Katz, who has also starred in some of his earlier books.

As well as lots of laughs, there are a few cautionary tales in here about who to befriend – and watching out for bears.

The book was such a success that it was later made into a movie starring Robert Redford, Emma Thompson, Nick Nolte, and more. If he’s more into movies than reading, maybe buy him that one instead.

We’re obsessed with:

  • Laugh-out-loud funny
  • Real-life hiking account
  • Leading American travel writer
  • Available as a book or a movie

Not so hot:

  • Some parts could put him off hiking!
